The Menalas Forest
Overview
The Menalas Forest spans much of eastern Elandria, a sprawling expanse of ancient trees, misty glades, and verdant undergrowth. It is a land steeped in magic and history, divided by rivers originating from the Spine of the World and home to a myriad of peoples.
While the Menalayan Empire, a union of the four elven races, officially claims governance over three-fifths of the forest, the remainder belongs to independent demi-races and nomadic tribes. Despite the empire’s outward show of unity, elven politics are rife with intrigue, betrayal, and ambition, as each race vies for supremacy within their shared borders.
Geographical Divisions
The Sub-Forests
The Menalas Forest is divided into distinct sub-forests, each named for its dominant features, magical resonance, or the river that cuts through it. These regions form the core of elven and demi-race territories.

Elven Governance and Intrigue
The Menalayan Empire
While the empire presents a unified face to the outside world, it is internally divided into four semi-autonomous provinces, each governed by one of the elven races.
- Sun Elves (The Golden Court):
- Known for their arrogance and superiority, they claim to be the "true rulers" of the empire.
- Focus on diplomacy and external relations to maintain their dominance.
- Moon Elves (The Starry Conclave):
- Subtle and enigmatic, they excel in arcane magic and prophecy.
- They often scheme to unseat the Sun Elves as the dominant faction.
- Forest Elves (The Verdant Circle):
- Pragmatic and cooperative, they strive to balance power between the factions.
- They maintain ties with the demi-races to bolster their influence.
- Dark Elves (The Shadow Court):
- Masters of deception and subterfuge, they wield significant covert power.
- Though they act as the empire’s enforcers, they frequently undermine their rivals.
The High Throne:
The empire’s titular ruler, the Menalayan Emperor, is a ceremonial figurehead with little real power. True decisions are made by the Council of Four, a governing body composed of representatives from each elven race. Meetings are rife with political games and secret alliances, as each faction vies for dominance.
Conflicts and Alliances
- Demi-Race Resistance:
- While some demi-races live harmoniously within elven territories, others resist elven authority fiercely, particularly in the Briarveil Labyrinth and the Whispergrove.
- Fox-spirits and dryads are especially defiant, relying on ancient magic to defend their lands.
- Inter-Elven Rivalries:
- Dark Elves frequently sabotage Sun Elf diplomatic efforts.
- Moon Elves use prophecy to manipulate Forest Elf alliances.
- Forest Elves counteract schemes by appealing to demi-races for support.
- External Threats:
- The Menalas Forest often faces incursions from fire demons of the Southlands and border conflicts with the Thunderclaw Orc tribe.
